Football in Zurich: 6 places every football fan should know

Zurich might not be the first city that comes to mind on a football trip through Europe. Still, there's plenty to discover here: an international football museum, two historic professional clubs, historic sports memorabilia and, of course, plenty of football shirts.

Here you'll find six places in Zurich that are worthwhile for football fans.

1. FIFA Museum

Let's start with the obvious place.

The FIFA Museum Zurich is located right by Enge station and showcases international football history across several floors.

One focus is on the World Cups. There are also historic objects, films, interactive installations and plenty of shirts.

The collection of national team shirts from all FIFA member associations is especially impressive.

You should allow around two hours for a visit.

2. Letzigrund Stadium

The Letzigrund is the city's main football stadium and home ground of FC Zürich and Grasshopper Club Zürich.

As a result, the two big Zurich rivals end up sharing the very same stadium.

It's not exactly romantic.

If a match is taking place during your stay in Zurich, it's worth checking the fixture list.

Swiss football is perhaps less glamorous than the Premier League. In return, you're often closer to the pitch and to local football culture.

3. Hardturm: a piece of Zurich football history

Today there's no football stadium here anymore. Still, the former Hardturm Stadium is important to the history of Zurich football.

For decades it was home to Grasshopper Club Zürich and one of the best known football stadiums in Switzerland.

The last match took place there in 2007, after which the stadium was demolished.

Since then, Zurich has been waiting for a definitive new stadium solution for its football clubs.

Anyone interested in stadiums and football history will mainly find one thing here: a rather long Zurich story about how complicated it can be to build a football stadium.

That's also part of local football culture.

4. retroshirts.ch: vintage football shirts in Zurich

If you're especially interested in historic football shirts, you can carry on with us.

At retroshirts.ch you'll find several hundred original secondhand and vintage football shirts from Switzerland and around the world.

The range goes from affordable secondhand shirts to rare shirts from past decades.

We don't sell newly produced retro copies. The shirts genuinely date from their respective era.

Among other things, you'll find:

  • FC Zürich, Grasshoppers and other Swiss clubs
  • Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A and La Liga
  • other European and international clubs
  • national teams from all over the world
  • shirts from the 80s, 90s and 2000s
  • current secondhand shirts
  • special player versions and collector's items

Since almost every shirt only exists once, the range is constantly changing.

5. Sportantiquariat Germond

If you haven't seen enough historic sporting items after the FIFA Museum or your visit to retroshirts.ch, you should take a detour into Zurich's old town.

The Sportantiquariat Germond on Frankengasse specialises in historic sports literature and sports memorabilia.

The range includes, among other things:

  • Books
  • Magazines
  • Match programmes
  • Photographs
  • Posters
  • Autographs
  • Pins
  • other historic sports memorabilia

Football takes up a particularly large part of it. Anyone looking for old match programmes, football books, historic photos or other memorabilia can easily end up staying longer than planned.

Or go home with things you never knew you absolutely needed.

6. FC Zürich fan shop

Anyone wanting to get to know FC Zürich better will find current shirts, fan merchandise and club products at the official FCZ fan shop.

FC Zürich was founded in 1896 and is one of Switzerland's clubs with a long tradition.

If you're specifically looking for a current FCZ shirt, the official fan shop is the obvious place to go.

For older shirts from past seasons, on the other hand, it's worth checking out specialised secondhand and vintage sellers.

A day of football in Zurich

If you only have one day, it's easy to turn this into a little itinerary.

  • Morning: FIFA Museum near Enge station
  • Midday: Old town and Sportantiquariat Germond
  • Afternoon: Browse vintage shirts at retroshirts.ch
  • Evening: FC Zürich or Grasshoppers at the Letzigrund

This way, you can take in international football history, historic memorabilia, original shirts and genuine Zurich football all in one day.

For football fans, this is probably a more worthwhile use of time than a third lap of Bahnhofstrasse.
