Ceará Sporting Club was founded on 2 June 1914 in Fortaleza, the capital of the Brazilian state of Ceará, and is one of the most traditional football clubs in the region. The club enjoys particular popularity among the working class and, alongside its arch-rival Fortaleza EC, is considered one of the two leading clubs in the state. Ceará is also known by the nickname Vovô - German for "grandfather" - which dates back to an event in 1919 and remains part of the club's identity to this day.
